An Atlanta doctor could spend 20 years in federal prison if convicted on numerous fraud charges.

Dr. Rajashakher P. Reddy, 39, was arraigned Friday on federal charges of wire fraud, mail fraud, health care fraud, and obstruction of justice. He has been released on bond.

According to the indictment, between May 2007 and January 2008, Reddy committed fraud by signing and submitting thousands of reports without reviewing and interpreting x-rays and other film. He did this through his company, RSI, Inc., which provided radiologist coverage to hospitals in the southeast that lacked full-time radiology coverage, state court documents.

“This case shows a clear violation of the public's trust,” said Carl D. Bocchicchio of the HHS/Office of Inspector General. “Any time false claims are submitted for payment, our nation's health insurance programs and beneficiaries suffer.”

In addition to 20 years in prison, Reddy also faces a fine of up to $250,000 for each count.
