Decatur is in the process of putting up tornado sirens in all quadrants of the city.

Once installed, the city will sound the sirens whenever a tornado warning is issued for the area. The 3-to-5-minute blasts are designed to alert citizens who are outdoors to take cover.

Agnes Scott College already has a similar tornado siren. The city is installing its sirens, which were funded by a grant, at Westchester, Oakhurst and Winnona Park elementary schools and Glennwood Academy.

No final date has been set for all of the sirens to be put up. The city will conduct a test, once all are posted. It also plans tests on the first Wednesday of each month.
