Authorities are looking for the mother of a toddler left Thursday with Stone Mountain police.

DeKalb County police were called in to help find the 18-month-old boy's mother and facilitated getting the child to state Department of Family and Child Services officials, police authorities said.

Stone Mountain police Chief Chancey Troutman could not be reached for comment Thursday afternoon, and calls to the police station regarding this issue were directed to DeKalb police.

"The child is being turned over to DFCS," DeKalb police spokeswoman Mekka Parish told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

State officials would not confirm or deny whether they had the boy in custody or discuss the specific case, but said that in circumstances like this one they do everything they can to find the parents.

Channel 2 Action News spoke with the woman who left the child with police.
