Police seek suspect who escaped after Doraville cop-involved shooting
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Doraville police are looking for a domestic violence suspect they say escaped when officers were attacked by, and shot an armed man.
Juan Carmello Huerta-Garcia, 24, whom police were investigating, fled when another man drew his gun on police on the scene.
The incident began shortly before 9:30 p.m. when Doraville officers were called to a domestic dispute at an apartment on Shallowford Road, Doraville police spokesman Gene Callaway said.
While two officers were inside the apartment, the door bell to the back door rang, Callaway said.
"When one of the officers opened the door, he was met with a pistol in his belly," Callaway told the AJC.
That officer tried to knock the gun out of the man's hand, and when he refused orders to put the gun down, the second officer fired two shots, hitting the suspect in the abdomen and leg.
The wounded man, whose name has not been released, was taken to a local hospital in stable condition and was undergoing surgery early Tuesday, Callaway said.
The officers were not injured.
Callaway said that when the gunfire rang out, the original suspect from the domestic call fled out the front door of the apartment. Police are looking for that man, identified as Juan Carmello Huerta-Garcia, 24.
