Obama endorses U.S. Rep. Johnson
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
President Barack Obama endorsed U.S. Rep. Hank Johnson in his bid for re-election to represent Georgia’s Fourth Congressional District.
White House spokesman Adam Abrams confirmed the endorsement to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution on Thursday.
Johnson, a Democrat, is seeking a third term to represent the Fourth District, which includes most of DeKalb and parts of Gwinnett and Rockdale counties.
“Congressman Johnson has done an outstanding job," Obama said in a statement Thursday. “Together, we are fighting to renew our economy. Together, we passed historic healthcare reform. I am proud to stand with Hank and support his re-election.”
Johnson endorsed then-Senator Obama during his presidential campaign.
Johnson announced last year that he is battling Hepatitis C, but says he is healthy enough to continue to serve.
He is facing former DeKalb CEO Vernon Jones and DeKalb County Commissioner Connie Stokes on the Democratic ticket. Business consultant Liz Carter, retired naval officer Larry Gause and information security manager Cory Ruth are running on the Republican ticket.
The primary is scheduled for July 20 and the general election is scheduled for Nov. 2.
