A DeKalb County girl was released from the hospital Tuesday morning after being attacked by a pit bull on Saturday.

Her mother killed the dog by hitting it with a brick and stabbing it with a knife.

According to Lithonia police, 12-year-old A'lexus Zachary was standing at the front door of a friend's house. When the door opened, the dog sprang on Zachary.

Her mother, Tameka Zachary, ran to help but was unable to fend off the dog. She picked up a brick that was nearby and began hitting the dog in the head. Zachary's friend also spotted a knife, which the woman used to stab the dog repeatedly.

The girl ran into the house, and the dog collapsed and died.

A'lexus Zachary was taken to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston, where she had underwent surgery. The owner of the dog is a cousin of Zachary's friend. That person may be facing criminal charges, police said.

"She's doing fine," Tameka Zachary said Tuesday evening.
