The wrong-way driver who caused a four-car wreck on I-85 Sunday, injuring nine people, remains unconscious and in critical condition, police said Monday.

Alcohol might have been a factor, police said.

The driver of a green Chevy Blazer headed southbound in the northbound HOV lane between Chamblee Tucker and Shallowford roads just after 3 a.m., police spokesman Officer Jason Gagnon said.

The Blazer struck a Ford Explorer, then a Buick, Gagnon said. In all, four vehicles were involved.

Four people, including the driver who caused the accident, remained in the hospital Monday, Gagnon said.

Authorities shut the interstate for more than two hours.

Gagnon said it's unclear why the driver was going the wrong way but "alcohol may have been a factor."

No charges have been filed yet.

Gagnon said the driver was not carrying ID and police have not confirmed his identity.
