DeKalb wants control over transit tax

DeKalb County commissioners said they are willing to tax residents another penny for transportation, but only if they can control how it is spent.

The commission unanimously approved a resolution Tuesday that supports a referendum for the regional sales tax, but with 11 provisions – including local control over the money and no restrictions on MARTA funding.

“This legislation is really unfit for support for the folks in DeKalb and Fulton counties. Really it’s not fit for anybody,” Commissioner Jeff Rader said.

Under the current proposed legislation the money can not be used for MARTA’s operating and maintenance budgets. DeKalb residents already pay a one-cent sales tax to fund MARTA.

“It’s so disheartening that the state wants to tell us how to use our own money,” Commissioner Lee May told the AJC. “We will accept another penny only if we have control of it.”

The resolution will be sent to the governor and legislature.
