The shooting occurred Wednesday afternoon after officer Jerome Tillery was dispatched to the 3000 block of Bouldercrest Road in South DeKalb to investigate a report of a suspicious person and gunshots fired.
PoliceĀ said when Tillery got there, he noticed a pickup truck and a driver acting suspiciously. Derek Dwayne Frye allegedly got out of the truck, shot Tillery and then ran, leaving the truck parked in front of a vacant house.
While police continue to look for Frye, they said he contacted them Thursday morning. Police have not disclosed the nature of that contact.
Frye is facing three charges of aggravated assault.
