A man was shot late Sunday night after handing over his 1-year-old twins in a custody swap, and police believe the mother's new boyfriend was the shooter.

The shooting occurred outside the Whitney Chase apartments in DeKalb County, where the father lives.

The victim's mother told WSB-TV she was standing outside to say goodbye to her grandchildren when the shooting happened. She said that as soon as her son put the children in the PT Cruiser, the twins' mother drove away. Then gunfire erupted from a white SUV that had come up behind the PT Cruiser.

The father, Kaashif Johnson, was shot in the leg and hand. He was treated at Atlanta Medical Center and released Monday morning.

Police are searching for the mom and her boyfriend. Police believe she knew what was going to happen so she, too, is a suspect, police spokesman Officer Jason Gagnon told the AJC.

The twins just celebrated their first birthday over the weekend.
