Gov. Nathan Deal says he appreciates President Obama's prompt response in approving a federal disaster declaration for parts of Georgia ravaged by deadly tornadoes and storms.

Deal said in a statement shortly before noon Saturday that Georgia's congressional delegation jumped into gear to seek federal aid. He said the efforts paid off with Saturday's announcement that the funds had been approved.

Obama's disaster declaration makes federal funding available to help people recover in Bartow, Catoosa, Dade, Floyd, Polk, Spalding and Walker counties. Funds are also available on a cost-sharing basis for debris removal and emergency protective measures in 16 counties.

The storms killed 15 people and damaged hundreds of homes and businesses late Wednesday and early Thursday.

In hard-hit Ringgold, residents on Saturday were using chainsaws, axes and cranes to clear shattered buildings.
