The man accused of shooting and killing former NFL player Joe McKnight last week during a confrontation in Louisiana has been charged with one count of manslaughter.

The arrest was first reported by The Advocate on Tuesday morning, five days after authorities said Ronald Gasser, 54, killed McKnight during an apparent road-rage incident. Records from the Jefferson Parish Correctional Center show that authorities booked a man named Ronald Gasser into jail Monday.

Authorities took Gasser into custody Thursday after McKnight, 28, was shot three times at an intersection in Terrytown. McKnight was pronounced dead at the scene.

Gasser fired the fatal shots while sitting in his car, Jefferson Parrish Sheriff Newell Normand said last week, contrary to early reports that the 54-year-old stood over McKnight as the younger man tried to apologize to him.

Gasser stayed in his car until authorities arrived and surrendered a gun to investigators. He has admitted to the shooting and Normand said he has been "completely cooperative."

McKnight did not have a gun, deputies said.

Authorities released Gasser without charging him on Friday, sparking outrage nationwide.

Deputies continue to investigate the shooting.
