A man was taken into custody after a SWAT situation Saturday in Gwinnett County.

A man was arrested Saturday after he barricaded himself inside a residence in the Loganville area during a domestic dispute, Gwinnett County police said.

SWAT officers were called to the the incident, which involved the man’s ex-girlfriend, police spokesman J.D. Albright said in a news release.

The suspect was identified as 20-year-old Nathaniel Washington, police said. The woman had left the residence when police arrived.

About 9 a.m., police were called by the ex-girlfriend to the 1300 block of Stream Walk Drive, Albright said, but officers quickly determined the incident address to be in the 3000 block of Victoria Ridge Court. Information from the woman led officers to believe that Washington would be armed.

Because of ongoing arguments with Washington, the woman had made multiple attempts to leave the residence but was physically taken back inside by Washington, police said.

Only after she agreed to leave her cellphone behind did Washington allow her to leave, Albright said. The woman contacted police after seeking help from a neighbor.

Police called in the SWAT team after several failed attempts to make contact with Washington.

About 90 minutes after SWAT officers arrived, phone contact was made with Washington. After brief negotiations, Washington left the residence and was taken into custody without incident.

Washington was charged with aggravated assault by strangulation, false imprisonment, simple assault and battery, police said.
