What began with a woman stealing her mother’s car late Sunday turned into a chase that reached 100 mph on I-85 and ended when the woman hit a patrol car, authorities said.

Now, 20-year-old Caitlin Brooke Payne is in the Coweta County jail, charged with theft by taking and attempting to elude officers, records show.

Shortly before midnight, Payne took the keys to her mother’s 2014 Kia without permission after they had a dispute earlier about her returning to Atlanta, according to the incident report.

Payne made off with the car, and the mother contacted police.

Payne then led them on a pursuit on I-85 North before she left the interstate at Exit 56, authorities said.

After she allegedly ran a red light, Payne went back toward I-85 and soon hit a deputy’s car in the passenger side, the Georgia State Patrol said.

“Both vehicles were disabled on the scene and blocked the interstate,” the GSP said.

Deputies took Payne into custody. Neither she nor the deputy were injured.
