A delivery driver returned fire after he was lured to a vacant home in northeast Atlanta, ambushed and wounded in a shootout with would-be robbers, police said.

Officers responded to the scene on Wisteria Way and Mellrich Avenue about 10:20 p.m. Tuesday, Atlanta police Officer Stephanie Brown said.

The driver told investigators he was delivering Chinese food to the 2200 block of Wisteria Way when two women confronted him and two men pulled out guns.

The driver also had one, and gunfire was exchanged, police said.

The driver was shot in the back and one of the two armed men was hit in the leg.

Officers eventually found the armed man hiding in a grassy alley, Brown said. His three accomplices escaped and have not been found.

Two handguns and multiple shell casings were recovered, police said.

The driver and the suspect were taken to Grady Memorial Hospital. Though they required surgery, they are expected to be OK, police said.

Their names and other details have not been released.
