A Gainesville father faces child cruelty charges after authorities say his 3-month-old was shaken so hard that the child had bleeding on his brain, the Hall County Sheriff’s Office said.

Christopher Joe Medina, 34, remained in the Hall County jail without bond Friday following his arrest earlier Wednesday.

Authorities say Medina’s son had retinal hemorrhages and bleeding on the brain when he was taken to Scottish Rite Hospital.

“These injuries are consistent with a baby that has been shaken,” Hall County sheriff’s Lt. Scott Ware said in a news release.

Medina called 911 Monday after his son stopped breathing, Ware said. First responders stabilized the child, but he suffered other issues later that day.

Ware said Medina and the son’s mother drove their child to a fire station on Ga. 53 due to other symptoms. The baby was later taken to Scottish Rite, where the brain damage was discovered.

The child was transferred from the intensive care unit to a hospital room Thursday.
