SAVANNAH — Authorities say a Statesboro corrections officer who tried to save an animal's life ended up sacrificing her own.

Authorities haven't identified the female, but say she was a Statesboro Correctional Officer.

According to Georgia State Patrol, the woman was driving at the intersection of Highway 80 and Arcola Road in Bulloch County on Tuesday evening when she swerved her Nissan Pathfinder to avoid hitting a dog.

Authorities say she still struck the dog and ended up running off the road as well. It's unclear if she died at the scene or if the animal died.
