ROMANTIC GETAWAYS

Another romantic escape in the British Virgin Islands is Rosewood Little Dix Bay.
A table for two was set on the beach, illuminated by candles and torches set in the sand. A nearly full moon carved a silvery path across the gently lapping waves. A waiter stood at a discreet distance, ready to refill wine glasses and bring the next course of the five-course dinner. Rosewood Little Dix Bay, the first and largest resort on Virgin Gorda, takes good care of lovers.
Founded by Laurance Rockefeller, who also founded Caneel Bay on nearby St. John in the U.S. Virgin Islands, Little Dix still adheres to his philosophy of understated, low-tech luxury. There are telephones in the rooms now — a recent concession — but no TVs, the better to listen to the soothing sound of the Caribbean Sea and to pay full attention to one's companion.
Little Dix's half-mile-long beach is plenty large enough for sunbathing with excellent snorkeling right off shore, but for those who want even more privacy, the resort will pack picnic lunches and ferry guests to one of several neighboring beaches, which they will have all to themselves.
At Little Dix's hilltop spa with its dramatic views of the Sir Francis Drake Channel, couples can have a couples' massage followed by lunch on a secluded patio. The spa is equipped with private, outdoor showers as are many of the guest rooms. With vines draped over the walls and perhaps a tiny gecko peering nervously out of shiny eyes before he skitters away, a couple might well feel like Adam and Eve.
