Republican John McCain raised more money in Georgia last month than Barack Obama, but the Democrat still holds a commanding lead in Peach State dollars.
McCain, a U.S. senator from Arizona, raised more than $290,000 here in May, according to Federal Election Commission reports filed Friday. Obama, a U.S. senator from Illinois, raised about $208,000.
Libertarian presidential nominee Bob Barr of Smyrna, meanwhile, raised a total of more than $184,000 from March 27 through May 31, according to his first required report to the FEC. Of that, about $22,000 came from Georgia, which he represented in Congress for four terms as a Republican.
Overall, McCain nearly matched Obama in money raised in May, with Obama raising raising $21.9 million to $20.9 for McCain, according to the FEC filings. It was Obama's lowest total of any month this year. The month's haul brings Obama's campaign fund-raising total to more than $287 million, compared to $112 million for McCain.
U.S. Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.), whom Obama finally vanquished this month, upped her Georgia total to $2.03 million by bringing in $116,000 from the state in May. She raised a total of $16.27 million for the period.
Obama ended the period with $43 million cash on hand, to $32 million for McCain.
While McCain raised more in Georgia for the month, his total of $1.65 million raised here for the campaign is about half as much as the $3.27 million Georgians have given to Obama.
But McCain's take from Georgia in May was more than he raised from all but seven other states. Obama raised more in 16 other states.
