Julie Chao Covers Asia, based in Beijing Julie Chao joined Cox Newspapers as Asia correspondent in March 2000. Since 1996 she had been a reporter for the San Francisco Examiner, where she covered race and demographics in the Bay Area, focusing on Asian-Americans. Prior to that, she worked in Beijing for The Associated Press and Deutsche Presse Agentur, the German news agency. Margaret Coker Covers the Middle East, based in Jerusalem Margaret Coker joined the Cox Washington Bureau in 2000 as Moscow correspondent. Coker has been acting Moscow bureau chief for Business Week. Prior to that, she worked in Moscow for The Moscow Times and CBS Marketwatch. Her reporting background also includes time with UPI and CBS Marketwatch in Washington, D.C., covering Capitol Hill, the Federal Reserve and various government agencies. Bob Deans Covers the White House and national security/ foreign policy issues from Washington Bob Deans entered the newspaper business at age 10 delivering his hometown paper, the Richmond Times-Dispatch. In 1980 he became an Atlanta-based reporter for Fairchild Publications and the following year moved to New York as a Fairchild editor. In 1983, he returned to the South as a reporter for the Charleston (S.C.) News and Courier. The following year he joined the Atlanta Journal-Constitution as a business reporter. Deans became the Cox Newspapers Asia correspondent in the fall of 1987, based in Tokyo. He covered major events such as the student massacre in Beijing's Tiananmen Square and the assassination of Indian leader Rajiv Gandhi. He joined the Cox Washington Bureau in January 1992. Susan Ferriss Covers Mexico, based in Mexico City Susan Ferriss worked as a free-lance reporter in Central America in 1983 and later produced a documentary film, "The Golden Cage," about Mexican migrant workers in California. She covered immigration, and did investigative and general assignment reporting at the Monterey Herald before joining the San Francisco Examiner. She became the Cox Newspapers Mexico correspondent in June 1997. She and Ricardo Sandoval co-wrote the book "Fight in the Fields: Cesar Chavez and the Farmworkers Movement," published in 1997 by Harcourt Brace. Recent stories |

Don Melvin Covers Europe and Great Britain, based in London Don Melvin, the London-based European correspondent for Cox Newspapers, has reported from nearly 30 countries over the past several decades. His assignments have taken him throughout Central America, the Caribbean, Europe and Africa. Most recently he reported from Europe and Pakistan as part of a team of Cox foreign correspondents covering the war against terrorism. Melvin has worked for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution since 1994. For seven years before that, he worked for the Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel, the last four of which were spent as the paper's Atlanta correspondent. From 1981-1987, he worked for the Burlington (Vt.) Free Press. Melvin, a native New Englander, spent an academic year in France during high school and later attended Harvard College. He is a licensed pilot. Recent stories |

Mike Williams Covers Caribbean and South America, based in Florida Mike Williams began his newspaper career at the Robertsdale Independent, a Baldwin County, Ala., weekly. With no formal newspaper training, he learned the business by writing for all sections of the paper, taking photos, laying out pages and even helping to burn plates for the press. From there he joined the Montgomery Advertiser, where he was part of a team investigating the nation's largest hazardous waste dump, a yearlong project that won the 1984 Edward J. Meeman Award from the Scripps-Howard Foundation. After a stint at the Birmingham News, he joined The Miami Herald in 1985, covering courts, police and general assignments. He joined the Atlanta Journal-Constitution's National Desk in 1989 as Florida correspondent. In 1991 he received a National Press Foundation Fellowship for three months of Spanish study in Mexico, and in 1992 was part of the Constitution's team covering the Barcelona Olympics.
