Snow possible Monday as temperatures fall

Sunday, April 05, 2009

Wind gusts of up to 40 mph ushered in a spring chill on Monday, with midday temperatures falling into the 40s around metro Atlanta.

A slight chance of rain or snow flurries is forecast for Monday night, with a low of 33 expected. But the chance of any precipitation is only 20 percent, the National Weather Service said.

Monday’s afternoon high is expected to be 46 — several degrees chillier than it was overnight.

If any snow falls in metro Atlanta, it will be after 2 a.m., the weather service said.

“As the air mass gets colder, rain showers will turn to snow showers over far north Georgia, with a chance of rain and snow showers as far south as Atlanta and Athens toward (Tuesday) morning,” the weather service said.

Forecasters said the northeast Georgia mountains could see a half-inch or so of the white stuff, while “higher elevations could get an inch plus.”

A front moving through the area before daybreak Monday brought blustery winds and falling temperatures.

A wind advisory was in effect for all of north Georgia Monday, with the weather service predicting sustained winds of 20 to 35 mph with gusts to 40.

It noted that such winds can make driving tricky, especially for trucks. The high winds also raise the hazard of falling trees.

Tuesday will be mostly cloudy with a high of 49 with continued gusty winds of 15 to 20 mph, followed by a Tuesday night low dropping to 29, the weather service said.

More springlike weather returns Wednesday, with sunny skies and a high of 64. Highs will climb to around 70 for the back half of the week, but a chance of rain returns to the forecast Thursday.
