Fast-moving thunderstorms threw off lightning that caused two house fires and dumped rain that flooded five apartments Sunday afternoon in suburban areas south of Atlanta.
Clayton County Battalion Chief Landry Merkison said houses on Lundy Court and Amberly Road were struck by lighting around 2:15 p.m. in the northeastern part of the county.
While the homes were damaged, neither was destroyed and no injuries were reported, Merkison said.
Elsewhere, flash floods damaged five apartments in central Clayton near Morrow, Merkison said.
"We had so much rain in very short period of time it just overwhelmed the drains. And with the ground being as hard as it has been, it all runs," Merkison said.
The storms also delivered a downpour on the Atlanta Pride Parade just as it was set to step off at 1 p.m. Police reported no damage or injuries to parade participants or spectators.
The National Weather Service predicts a 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms through Monday afternoon. Skies will be mostly cloudy, with an overnight low around 69 and a high of 91 on Monday.
