A Lilburn police officer was injured when his patrol car was rear-ended Tuesday morning by a dozing driver.

Officials with the Lilburn Police did not release the name of the officer or of the person who caused the four-car accident around 7 a.m., said Matthew Lake, public information officer for the department.

Heading toward Lawrenceville, the police officer was in a line of vehicles on Lawrenceville Highway that was stopped at the traffic light at Beaver Ruin Road. A sedan came up behind the police car and hit it without stopping, because the driver had fallen asleep, Lake said.

"There were no skid marks," Lake said. "He didn't even try to stop."

The impact knocked the police cruiser, a Chevy Impala, into two cars ahead of it. The officer was transported to a local hospital, where he is in stable condition. The police car was totaled, Lake said.

The sleeping driver wasn't charged. No alcohol or drugs were involved in the accident, said Lake.
