Early voting began Monday and goes through Friday in Cobb and Clayton counties and the city of Dunwoody in advance of the Sept. 16 special election.

In Cobb County, voters will be deciding on whether to extend a 1 percent sales tax for education for another five years.

The current special purpose local option sales tax expires at the end of the year.

The third version of SPLOST is projected to bring in $856 million for school construction, maintenance, technology and debt retirement in Cobb County and Marietta City schools.

Voters in south-central Cobb also began turning in advance ballots with their choice for school board Post 7, Democrat Alison Bartlett or Republican Ronald Younker.

Bartlett and Younker are seeking to fill Teresa Plenge’s seat for the remainder of the year. They again will face off in the Nov. 4 general election to represent school board Post 7 for a full four-year term.

Voting is taking place at the Cobb Elections Main Office on 736 Whitlock Ave., Marietta, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and at the East Cobb and South Cobb government service centers, at Parks Western District Office, and the North Cobb Senior Center, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Photo identification is required.
