Carter Center to make human rights recommendations

An international gathering of human rights activists at the Carter Presidential Center, including former President Jimmy Carter, began meeting this morning to develop recommendations the center will present to President-elect Barack Obama.
The group, including the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights and workers from Muslim, African and Western countries will discuss issues such as torture, supporting democracy, the Geneva Convention and closing the prison at Guantanamo. The program is a Carter Center initiative.
The participants will be in Atlanta through Wednesday.
A Webcast of a panel discussion by President Carter, Pakistani human rights lawyer Hina Jalani and Egyptian human rights activist Saad Ibrahim will be take place from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday. Information at www.cartercenter.org.
