Atlanta police Lt. Keith Meadows said three intruders forced their way into the home, in a neighborhood a few blocks south of Turner Field.

Devontae Alexander Jones, a junior at Carver High School, tried to barricade himself inside a back bedroom, but was shot once in the head and killed, Meadows said.

The intruders also shot and killed the family dog.

“The victim’s mother was also an intended target in this home invasion, but somehow, the weapon managed to jam and she escaped,” Meadows said.

Meadows said a motive for the invasion had not been determined. There was apparently nothing taken from the house, and Meadows said investigators had found nothing to indicate that drugs were involved.

Police have not released any descriptions of the suspects.
