SWAT officers were called to the scene when the man came out on the porch and brandished his handgun at officers. "He was trying to bait officers to come in and take him out," Campbell said.

Police negotiators made contact with the man but weren't able to get him to surrender, police said.

The man came out on the front porch shortly before 5 p.m. and shot himself, Campbell said. The gunman, who police did not identify, was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition Thursday night.

The police spokesman couldn't say if there was any indication the man was under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Police continued to investigate the incident.
