You don't need cookie cutters to make these easy, festive treats —- just a good sharp knife to slice the dough.
These cookies may look like a geometric puzzle, but are very easy to assemble.

Makes about 60 cookies
Preparation time: 15 minutes, plus 2 1/2 hours to chill
Cooking time: 30 minutes
1 cup (2 sticks) butter, at room temperature
1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 egg
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons orange peel
2 ounces unsweetened chocolate, melted in the microwave and cooled slightly
In large bowl of a mixer, beat the butter on medium speed for 30 seconds. Add sugar, baking powder and salt; beat until combined. Beat in the egg and vanilla until combined. Mix in the flour.
Divide the dough in half. Stir the orange peel into half of the dough; stir the melted chocolate into the other half of the dough.
If necessary, cover and chill the doughs until they are easy to handle. Shape each half of the dough into a 10-inch-long roll. Wrap each in plastic wrap. Chill about 2 hours or until dough is firm. Using a sharp knife, cut each chilled roll lengthwise in half, then into quarters. Reassemble the rolls, alternating chocolate and orange quarters. Wrap and chill about 30 minutes, until dough is firm. (Dough can be wrapped tightly in plastic or foil and frozen for several weeks.) Using a large, sharp knife, cut dough into 1/4-inch-thick slices. Place slices 1 inch apart on an ungreased cookie sheet.
Bake in a 375-degree oven for 7 to 9 minutes or until edges are firm and bottoms are lightly browned. Transfer cookies to a wire rack; cool. —- From "Better Homes and Gardens Holiday Cookies" (Meredith Integrated Marketing, 2001, $3.50)
