The war over veterans’ votes is particularly intense this year. The 2000 census indicated the nation has roughly 26.5 million veterans, about a third of whom served during the Vietnam era.

John Kerry of Massachusetts and John Edwards of North Carolina are still vying for the 2004 Democratic nomination while Sens. Joe Lieberman, D-Conn., and Bob Graham, D-Fla., have dropped out. Others who have run in the past are Lamar Alexander, R-Tenn., Joe Biden, D-Del., Robert Byrd, D-W.Va., Elizabeth Dole, R-N.C., Tom Harkin, D-Iowa, Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, Ernest Hollings, D-N.C., Edward Kennedy, D-Mass., Richard Lugar, R-Ind., John McCain, R-Ariz., and Arlen Specter, R-Penn.
