Three soldiers from 48th die in accident
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Three soldiers from the 48th Brigade Combat Team died in Iraq Monday when the vehicle in which they were riding drove into a canal, military officials said Tuesday.
The three, all from a Douglasville-based detachment of the 1st Battalion, 108th Armor Regiment, were part of a convoy conducting a night mission at the time of the accident, which occurred at 3:45 a.m. Monday.
Sgt. Thomas Strickland
The soldiers were identified as Sgt. Thomas Strickland, 27, of Fairplay, and Spc. Joshua Dingler, 19, of Hiram and Spc. Paul Saylor of Bremen.
Their deaths bring to 15 the number of 48th Brigade soldiers who have died since the unit arrived in Iraq in early June, 11 in combat incidents and four in vehicle accidents. Another 48th soldier died in a vehicle accident in Kuwait in May.
Strickland is the first Douglas County resident to die in combat since Vietnam, said county spokesman Wes Tallon.
“We had a huge send-off for our Army National Guard unit in January,” Tallon said. “The whole community is very tight-knit and you know this is something we hoped would never happen.”
Sgt. Joe Brown of Dallas, who is at home recuperating from wounds suffered in Iraq, said Dingler was a driver in his platoon.
“He was like a son to me. In fact, he called me ‘dad,’” Brown said.
Of the three soldiers, Brown said: “They were great soldiers and some of the best men that I’ve had the privilege of knowing. I am a better person because of having known them.”
Dingler’s mother was about to take over as president of the unit’s family readiness group, said Aurora English, the group’s former president.
“His family is like gold to us,” English said of Dingler. “He wanted to be a soldier since he was young. He was in ROTC. That’s all he ever wanted to do.”
English’s husband, Sgt. Ken English, is with the unit in Iraq. She talked to him by telephone this morning.
“He wanted to make sure we didn’t forget they were heroes,” she said.
Families wrote the names of their soldiers on yellow ribbons and hung them in the National Guard armory in Douglasville. The soldiers are supposed to take the ribbons down when they return from Iraq.
Aurora English and another spouse talked Tuesday about placing a black stripe on the ribbons for the three deceased soldiers.
“We’re all kind of in shock,” she said.
Aurora English and a several 108th rear detachment soldiers hovered around a computer screen in the armory Tuesday morning, peering at digital photos of their friends in Iraq.
First Lt. Jeff Morgan stayed home from Iraq because of a family emergency. As he glanced at the photos, he talked about wanting to join his buddies, particularly now that they have lost three of their own.
“I want to be back with my men. I trained with these guys for years,” said Morgan, the rear detachment commander for the 108th’s headquarters company. “I have a big hole in my heart because I can’t be with them.”
Staff writers Saeed Ahmed and Anna Varela and photo editor Celine Bufkin contributed to this article.

This story brought so many tears to my eyes.. I knew these men and two of them, my daughter loved so very much..Joshua Dingler always had a smile on his face and did so much to be there for others..Paul Saylor was also so funny.. He loved to take pictures of the guys while at Ft.Stewart and made a video.. Spc. Chad Carter turned all these into little shows that I shared with other family members back in March at a family Support meeting.. Karen—I will be praying for you all and if you need anything you have my cell number.. I love you and I thank you so much for being there for me when I needed someone to talk to.. I know Paul was enaged to a very special girl that made him so happy and I hope you will always know that about him.. Today I have spent most of my day looking at the pictures and things I have that Spc. Chad Carter gave to me and I am just in so much shock. But they are now home…We are thinking of each and every one of you all…..Please e-mail or call if you need anything—We are here for you… To All The Scouts—- We Love You and We are Hurting With You All…To the Ones that Know my Daughter—well you all know what you mean to her..PLease Come Home Soon…. Please Come Home Soon….. Jeannie

May God comfort and bless these families. My heart is heavy with grief for these families and our soldiers who are still over there greiving the loss of their brothers. I share in the shock of this incident and have shed many tears for these young men over the last 2 days. My husband is serving with the 48th BDE Scout Platoon out of Douglasville and has always spoken highly of these young men. They deserve much praise and honor for their sacrifice for this country. I take great pride in having gotten to know Spc. Saylor, he was an outstanding young man whom I will always remember for the constant smile on his face. May God bless these families, our troops still serving and those of us who sit at home and wait for their return. We are able to live in the land of the free because of the brave young men and women like these who serve in our military.

My prayers go out to the Strickland family, the Saylor family, and the Dingler family. It’s an awful thing ot happen. Our ROTC repected your familys today. My dad is from the Douglasville Armory and is now over there with the 48th. It’s a pretty scary thing knowing he could be next. But i have no idea how it feels to have someone that is next. I pray for all of you. Your sons and family members our Hero’s. God Bless You

In this time of sorrow, my heart is with the members of the 48th and their families. As a friend and classmate of Paul Saylor, he will be missed. He always had a kind heart and a great smile through the good times and the bad. My thoughts and prayers are with the Saylor family as they grieve because of this tremendous loss. Words cannot express the pain I feel for the loss of a friend. To the 48th, you are in the thoughts and prayers of everyone back home. Come home soon…

No parent ever expects to out-live a child. My heart breaks for the families of these brave soldiers, and for their brothers left behind. There are just no words that can heal their broken hearts at this time. We must all step up and make sure that the rest of the 1/108th AR, and all of the soldiers in harm’s way, know that we support them in every way and pray for their safe return. Whether you agree with the reasons they are there or not, this is the time for support and encouragement. Agendas can be addressed another day. Stay strong, soldiers. Love, Mom

*In regards to the post by “Amos”….. Once again I can not believe that some one would come on here and post such JUNK. I truly thought this was for families and friends of the soldiers. You bring dishonor to all of these men and women ,not to mention disrespecting these poor families who have lost there dear loved ones, by spouting things like that. You need to go somewhere else and vent your political anger toward the President. * As for myself , I wish to express my deepest sympathy for all of you who lost some one. May God wrap His loving arms around each of you and heal your broken hearts. You are al in my prayers and thoughts. Remember, none of this is in vain, they were each one a HERO!! With Love, Kim

My prayers and smypathy go out to the families of these heros and to the 108th. It is very upseting to read slurs on our President and ignorant remarks about this war from some of your readers. But this is America, and that is one of the rights that these brave young men died to protect. They also died protecting all of us here at home from the terror that has befallen the people of Iraq, Isreal, England, Spain, ect.. And may I remind the people who almost four years ago boasted “We Will Never Forget” bumper stickers, that maybe you have forgotten. Maybe you have forgotten that our President has just a little more information and knowledge about what is going on than you do. Maybe you have forgotten or haven’t noticed that some of us feel our country’s safety and freedom as well as our respnsibilities to the rest of the world are worth sacrificing and dying for. “FREEDOM ISN’T FREE” is more than just a catchy slogan for a nation at war - It is a reality!!! I would suggest that you put your energies to better use, like supporting our troops, supporting our President, be thankful you have a military that believe you are worth fighting for and if necessary, worth dying for. I say this as the wife and mother of two soldiers now in Iraq, my husband and daughter. It is my daughter’s second tour there. She already knows after a short stateside tour that she is going to Afghanistan. She is an MP, a touret gunner on convoys. My Husband is Infantry. I could loose them both. That is a reality. I am so proud of both of them, and their decision to serve their county. Most of all I am humbled and thankful that they would overlook almost half of a nation who has grown apathetic, and wants something for nothing. They still think it’s worth the sacrifice. We all need to live up to what they believe is worth fighting for. GOD BLESS OUR SOLDIERS, LORD, MAKE US WORTHY AS A NATION TO DESERVE THEIR SACRIFICE. AMEN.

All of us at Borders Store #376 will remember fellow employee Tom Strickland as the gentle, intelligent, funny guy who never had a harsh word for anyone. He loved good books and valued education and friendship. We can be sure he’s up there having great conversations with Twain, Dickens, Austen, and even Lewis Grizzard.

freedom isnt free and most will never know the sacrifice that must be paid to keep it that way. I was in JROTC with Dingler for 2 years and knew him when he enlisted to the military. As a friend I can say that he was certain of his decision, and that most of us will be following in his footsteps. We all have become greater for knowing such heroes and can only pray to live up to their expectations. You never think that it could happen to someone you know. I am still enlisting into Pararescue and I can only hope that Dingler and the other 2 soldiers be able to guide me and keep me safe. Freedom isnt free, it is payed for with blood. GOD bless our troops and support them.

Joshua Dingler was not only a great solider but an awesome teacher. He was my Batallion Commader in East Paulding High School’s Army JROTC program two years ago. He taught me so much about military bering and what it meant to be a great cadet and a citizen of the United States. He wouldnt let anyone fall behind, or loose out on fun. He was funny, talented, and skillful at everything he did. Now he is gone I would like to send my condolences to his mother Mrs. Dingler the Rotc mom, his father an insperation to all, his little brother samuel who will have big shoes to fill, and the family of his girlfriend Katelyn may God Bless you and take care of you.

My sincere heartfelt condolences go out to the Strickland, Dingler, and Saylor families in their time of loss. All of these fine young men gave the ultimate sacrifice for their country. I had the honor and privilege of being one of Paul Saylor’s teachers when he was a student at Bremen High School. Spc Paul Saylor was truly a wonderful young man. He was an all around good student who excelled in everything he did. He loved theatre, and I can still see him in my mind as Danny Zuko in Grease. He had an infectious smile and he was loved by all who knew him. I am not surprised by all the comments about him I have seen by people who have known him since. He was an inspiration to all whose lives he touched. All of these young men will be greatly missed, and their memories will live on. I send my love to Jamie and Patti Saylor and to Paul’s brother, Jamie. Please know that all of us at Bremen High School hold you in our hearts and prayers. May God be with you.
