How will you spend your Fourth of July?

Members of the 48th Brigade and their families will be apart this holiday. If you are a family member, what will you be doing this weekend? What do you expect it to be like? If you are a soldier deployed in Iraq, what are your plans and what will the observance mean this year?

The 4th of July takes on a whole new meaning this year. It has always been an important family holiday but with 2 family members currently serving in Iraq with 108th, it will remind you what the holiday is all about. Thomas, without you here the holidays really aren’t the same. We will go through the motions of the 4th at the lake but those huge signs reading “We miss you Thomas and Jeremy” hanging off the deck are a constant reminder of you Jeremy and all of the other men and women who have and currently are fighting for our country. On this 4th of July, we will remember our “HEROES” especially our very own who cannot be with us.

Thomas(PFC. Clark) and Jeremey(SSG. Birchfield) we are all so proud of you guys and can’t wait for you and everyone else’s safe return. Love yall both!! Thomas, I pray for you daily and dream of you constantly, I love you heart and soul. Happy 4th of July to all of the 48th and their families.

My husband is with the 48th right now. I have met some very amazing women during this deployment. I thank God for them everyday for giving me such great support from them. I truly couldn’t do this without them. A few of us have decided to meet up in Perry on Saturday to watch the fireworks. We plan to take pictures and send them to our loved ones in Iraq. We thought it would be great to celebrate this very special July 4th together.

For the first time in several years we will be sitting home, cooking out and calling our son Spc. Elijah Carroll with E troop 108th Cav. For the last 5 years he has run the Peachtree Road Race and we, especially Elijah, will miss staying at the Grand Hyatt, cheering on all the racers, and joining the crowds in Piedmont Park.

My son, Spc. Brian J. Yawn, is with the 108th. This year the 4th of July feels a little different because I will be thinking about my child insuring our freedom. It makes me realize even more how special that beautiful red, white, and blue flag really is. God Bless all the soldiers and especially those of the 48th/1-108th.

The fourth of July is taking on a new meaning for me. I have always been patriotic and loved America and its freedoms. I love the parades, the memories, the old movies..all the family get togethers. But this year my son is fighting for what I love and cherish so dearly….the fourth means a great deal more this year. My prayers go to allof the service people and as I celebrate with the family here, I want Sgt Jason Ledford to know we love him and we are saving a place at the table for him and his new family. I am very proud of you Jason. Your mom loves you. Happy 4th!!

Our son Jim was injured at St. Michael’s on June 12th. He is recovering here at Walter Reed Hospital. All wounded soldiers and their families have been invited to view the 4th of July National fireworks from the south lawn at the White House as guests of the White House.

My son, Ryan Jeffries is seriving with the 48th, 118FA. My husband is a Viet Nam Vet. The 4th has always been a time for the family to get together, and then to attend the fireworks display in our community. We will do the same this year, as we feel even stronger this year about our patriotism. We miss Ryan, but we are very proud of him and his mission in Iraq. I will proudly be wearing my tee shirt that signifies that my son serves with the 48th, and when they sing “Proud to be an American”, I will be singing as loud and proud as ever. Laura Wallace

I will be spending it with not only family, but another fellow military wife. The holidays are hard for both families and soliders! Often the families are forgotten as one day runs into the next waiting for our spouses to return home. It’s nice to spend the holidays with people who miss them as much as you and never forget their sacrifice! I miss you Chris! Love, sugar bear

I will spend the 4th of July at home with my 5 year old son. I’m not sure if it will just be the two of us or if we will spend time with family and friends. Whatever we do this 4th and for every holiday for the next year, it will not be the same without my husband Sgt. Jeremy Putman. I miss my husband and Nicholas misses his daddy. We can’t wait for his safe return home.

To Jeremy, I love you with all my heart. Happy Anniversary (6/5) and Happy Birthday (6/16). I am keeping up with all the special days and holidays and we will celebrate them all when you come home. Nick said to tell you he loves you. You are his hero.

To the entire 48th brigade, especially the 167th of AL, you are in my thoughts and prayers. God bless all of you.

While we’re far from Georgia in Montana, we’ll be wearing our 48th BCT shirts and watching a hometown 4th of July parade in a nearby small town. We’ll wave our VFW flags, catch candy, and support all our troops all the time. Watching fireworks in a nearby park from our front porch will end the day, and photos will of course be sent to our soldier, LT Hull of the 148th.

My husband is serving over in iraq. he is in e troop 108 cav. his name is pfc russell bentley. we are a military family before this war started because we both served during desert storm. the fourth has always had sentimental meaning for us but this year it will be alot different. my husband joined back up in january to become a chaplain. he was attached out to the 48th brigade and left in March. we feel that in the midst of all of the bloodshed in iraq, there can still be an inner peace felt through our savior jesus christ. this is our personal belief not because of a political stand but for the love of mankind. we all make mistakes and experience difficulty in our lives but isnt great that we have a loving savior who loves us more than we love ourselves. anyways this fourth will be special for us because we will not only be thinking about our soldier but all of the men and women serving over their for our freedom. in my husbands case alot of spiritual freedom. I will try to spend the 4th like every other year and carry on as “normal” as possible. My son is a Cav Scout in Echo Troop, 108th CAV. I will go out to our small fishing lake, listen to some patriotic music, maybe shoot some fireworks, grill and continue to pray for our soldiers’ safety. My family will continue to fly our American flag over the 4th and will write a letter and send an email to let Josh know we are thinking of him, miss him and appreciate what he and the other soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan are doing for the cause of freedom.

Since my husband is away, I cannot think of a better way to celebrate Independence Day than by helping the troops. I will be volunteering at the USO at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport on Friday followed by a cookout at the Parents’ house. For the remainder of the weekend, I will be packaging tons(!) of needed and comfort items donated from friends at work for shipment to our 48th Brigade troops at Camps Joe, Michael, and Row. We all want to show our support and that we thank them dearly for their service and sacrifices.

I will still be scared to shoot the Roman Candles without you!!! And the yearly bottle rocket war will not be the same. Thanks to the reporter and photographer that has made my days so much more tolerable during this hard time. Keep up the good work. You guys will be missed after July.

My uncle has a condo in Daytona and my husband Sgt. Timothy Shipman said that his kids still needed a vacation weather he got to go or not. He wants to see pictures of his children smiling & enjoying themselves. My aunt made him a scrapbook to take with him & we send him pages with pictures and poems to add to it. He said it keeps him connected to us. We will be thinking of him all day, because of people like him and other soldiers we are able to go freely, and maybe one day the children of Iraq will be able to enjoy themselves without worry. WE LOVE & MISS YOU TIM!!!TAKE CARE & BE SAFE!!!!!

I will spend this year with much more appreciation than ever for the men and women whom have ensured our freedom up until this date. But this year I will be sad and honored at the same time that my husband SSG Harley Hendrix is in Iraq helping to ensure we all as americans can enjoy this holiday in particular. To my husband I Love You More than words could ever say and I miss you horribly, I wish you were here to shoot fireworks with the boys this weekend but next year it will be that much sweeter. I wish everyone a happy and safe holiday and just ask that you give a moment to our soldiers that are serving our country, and making it so everyone can enjoy themselves. God Bless America and Godspeed to our troops.

Our country was founded in the world’s first political revolution against the tyranny of king and parliment. The destiny of the United States is to continue the fight against tyranny and to bring the light of democracy to all people who suffer under tyrants. Our family will celebrate that continuing revolution and remember our soldier in Iraq fighting another good war.

My wife, Captain Josie Hobbs, is serving with 48th Infantry Brigade at Camp Stryker, where she is the Commander of the 248th Military Intelligence Company. I too am in the military and have recently served tours in Kuwait, Qatar, and Iraq so I know exactly what is like for Josie and her troops in Baghdad. I miss and support her 200% and I wish I was back over there by her side instead of serving here stateside at Fort McPherson in Atlanta. I’ll be taking my nephews to Six Flags this weekend which is having a special salute to the troops program and later on to the movies to see “The War of the Worlds”. After that I’ll go visit my mother in Columbus and finish up the holiday weekend by going to climb Stone Mountain as Josie and I have often done in the past and later see the spectacular 4th of July laser light show and the fireworks. Stay safe Josie! I miss you!

Our Family will be celebrating this 4th of July without our very special soldier serving with the B CO 148th FSB PVT Erik Acosta. His Wife and 3 kids Tristian, Karissa, and Nathan all love and appreciate what their daddy is doing to defend the freedoms Americans hold so dear. It is because of these wonderful men and woman we can celebrate without fear of terror. And to all the soldiers in harm’s way all over the Globe, God Bless you. I fly as many Flags for you troops as I can around my home to remember the fallen and the ones still fighting the wars. We will be enjoying the fireworks show on Fort Stewart with family. I think there is no better place to celebrate the 4th of July then on a Military Installation, especially one with so many soldiers deployed at this time. Major Matt Saxton Your family will be spending the week of the 4th at the beach. ..Like we do every year. Kate and I will do our best to remember everything you would tell Luci Lea on her first trip to the beach, but our thoughts will still be with you. Kate said to tell you, “Don’t worry, Daddy, we won’t go out where there are sharks.” (In response to the recent bout of shark attacks in the Gulf.) I adore you, Matthew. Be safe.

My husband, Sgt. Jason Ledford, is with the 248th MICo. Last year was our first 4th of July with Jason. We watched fireworks in Athens and enjoyed the holiday together. This year we will again watch the fireworks but the celebration will be bittersweet. We will be safe at home enjoying the free life we have while our brave soldiers are in Iraq fighting so that the people there may also gain freedom. I am thankful to the soldiers, currently and throughout the history of this country. I live in a blessed nation and I am a blessed woman to have such a remarkable man who loves me and I send my love to him across the miles. Jason, be safe baby. Tracy

I have spent much of my time leading to this holiday reminding people to hug their children and thank God that they have the freedom to live in this country. That freedom was earned because people were willing to fight. The cause for freedom is not won yet. Our guys in the 48th BCT are fighting for it still. I will spend my 4th of July being so thankful that there are men and women who still feel the call of duty and honor. They are the reason that we can celebrate ANY holiday.

To my husband, Sgt. John O’Keefe, I love you so much. I miss you and am so proud of you. Take care of yourself. The kids miss you. You are the hero in our life. All my love - and then some…AOK
