Bunting prepared for church
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Some parishioners at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Marietta began preparing for the pope’s death a year ago, creating the traditional bunting that hangs over church doors.
Black bunting is hung when a pope dies. It remains until a new pope is chosen and is replaced by yellow and white bunting.
The “sewing circle,” a group of about 10 women, worked for several weeks trimming and sewing the bunting, said sewing circle member Chris Arnold.
“We started about a year ago,” Arnold said. “We just wanted to be prepared and thought it would be easier on us as church members to work on this not under duress.”
Friday afternoon Arnold and other volunteers were busy putting up hardware from which to hang the bunting.
“I’m glad now that we’re prepared,” said Arnold.
St. Joseph is having a special service tonight at 7 p.m. in honor of Pope John Paul II, Arnold said.
