THE NEW NUCLEAR RACE

Georgia Power vying for tax credits on nuclear reactors

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Published on: 07/31/08

Georgia Power is expected to file for Georgia Public Service Commission approval of two new nuclear reactors Friday, beginning an eight-month approval process.

The company and its parent, Southern Co., are among nine utilities with construction and operation licenses for 15 reactors pending at the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission. That number will likely grow.

The companies are competing for a limited number of tax credits that could net – in Southern's case – up to $125 million per year for eight years.

The credits will be divvied among companies that meet several requirements: file a license application by the Dec. 31 deadline, pour concrete by 2014 and begin operating by 2021.

Also, the first two new reactors will each get $500 million of insurance against regulatory delay.

Pro

Georgia Power says new reactors will help diversify power supply options at a time when others – like coal-fired and gas-fired plants – are being battered by soaring fuel costs. They also point out reactors do not emit carbon. Growth in Georgia will demand new plants that can run 24-7, year-round, the company says. Nuclear fits the bill.

Con

Environmental groups and others say new reactors are a bad idea, especially since there's no permanent place to store nuclear waste. The first generation of U.S. reactors came with a staggering price tag and huge cost overruns, they say. Conservation and renewable energy should be Georgia's first priority.

While the topic of nuclear energy is a hot topic of discussion among city leaders, corporate energy figures & everyday utility-paying consumers alike, I think conservation and renewable energy, and solar, wind & natural gas sources are more important topics to consider initially. Research proves that natural gas, wind & solar energy are very effective sources. In fact, the U.S. is the Saudi Arabia of wind power. The Great Plains states are prime locations for the greatest wind energy potential in the world! Georgia and other southern states could also do well to explore this possible means of energy production. It would create a boomerang effect where introducing viable sources of energy to the nation would decrease our dependence upon foreign sources, and at the same time the building of wind facilities to operate such possibilities would create a number of jobs for the local/regional economy. People like Jim Powell, the Democratic candidate for the statewide Public Service Commission of Georgia, Texas businessman T. Boone Pickens & other like-minded individuals have been discussing these very topics and more for quite some time...

That's why we need to vote for people like Jim Powell this coming November 2008 & financially contribute anything we can offer...$10, $25, $50 or whatever to help his campaign get him into office. It will be someone like him who will advocate to keep our monthly utility bills down to where we can afford them and explore other options to take America back to where we once were--INDEPENDENT.

ISN'T THAT WHAT THEIR LATEST RATE-HIKE WAS FOR??? THAT REALLY BITES - THAT THEY CAN ASK FOR THE RATE HIKE WHEN THEY WON'T EVEN BEGIN TO BUILD UNTIL AT LEAST 2012, AND THEY WERE GRANTED THE INCREASE FOR "R&D". CUT THE EXECUTIVE PERKS AND "BOONDOGGLES" AND GEORGIA POWER WILL HAVE THE MONEY FROM THEIR CURRENTS RATES.

True. On a large scale, but I would love to have solar panels on my home. Only a 100K investment. I think we need nuclear power though.

I feel that we need something else other than electricity. The grovernment needs to listen to the voice of the people and not always to the darn environmental groups who think they are gods to the people of America.I for one are tired of hearing about this group of people stopping the grovernment from drilling for oil off our coast while all of these foreign countries does what they want to do.
The environmentist are just as much Dictators as Bush, and Polise is to the American people and I feel that the people should start stopping the greedy groverenmnet and environmentist from doing what they want to do.They should be more concern about the price of oil and gas as well as groceries instead of drill off our own coast line.Down with all of them and like I stated,The grovernment needs and better start listening to the voice of the people instead of just doing what they / thes damn environmentist wants to do.They were voted in and can be voted out which a lots of them needs to be put out of office starting with Nancy Polise the house spreaker who is for all of the illegal wetbacks that are here in America taking our jobs that the sorry grovernment is giving them to come here to work for cheap labor and hurting the American people in the process and now trying to get the wetbacks on our Social Security.Maybe we should get reid of our grovernment and put our own working people in office who isn't million airs and rich idots like we ones we have in office right now and like Nancy Polise wanted her private plane which the tax payers would have to pay for insted of her using her own moeny which Bush put here where she is after people thinks she gave him oral sex for that position.

So Gary, you want to replace cheap, reliable energy (nukes) with expensive, non-productive energy (wind and solar). Do some research, wind and solar energy is not feasible on a large scale in the southeast.

Build it! Also invest in wind and tax breaks or incentives for home solar power.

They shouldn't be allowed to build a nuclear power plant. At least not a fission plant. Someday if they figure out how to do fusion safely we can reconsider. There are plenty of alternative energy sources they should be pursuing first. They should consider investing in Wind, and distributive system of photovoltaics on rooftops all over. or join together with other companies and put one in space the technology already exists to do this. just need the political will.
