Opulent BMW 760Li packed with goodies -
At $129,975, why worry about low gas mileage?
There's luxury and then there's absolute opulence.
BMW's 2006 760Li sedan fits into the latter category, big time.
How opulent?

Stereo and climate control --- from the rear seats. A coolbox (mini refrigerator) also in the rear. A voice-activated phone. Satellite and high-definition radio. Privacy shades. And a six-disc DVD changer in the trunk, controllable from the cabin.
That and plenty more is what you get from a car that carries a sticker price of $129,975, including options and a $1,700 gas guzzler tax.
The levy probably comes as a result of the 438 horsepower, V-12 engine and the car's gas mileage figures: 15 mpg city and 22 mpg highway, according to EPA stats.
But if you've got this kind of money to spend on an automobile, dropping a few more bills at the pump probably isn't a major concern for you, environmental worries aside.
Other high-tech features also contribute to the luxury --- and costliness --- of the car.
BMW's famous iDrive technology, which controls most functions such as radio, navigation system and climate control, is present, awaiting your commands.
The voice command feature seemed to be a little inconsistent when it came to recognizing a voice that was making basic requests. But when it works, it somehow feels almost gratifying.
Once you get past the neat gadgets, though, the most fun thing about this car is actually driving it.
There's a smooth six-speed automatic transmission and handling that is worthy of BMW's longtime ad slogan, "The ultimate driving machine."
Engine noise is almost nil.
Acceleration is impressive, reflected in its 444 pounds-feet of torque. BMW says the engine's direct fuel injection increases both torque and output.
The 760Li has an aluminum suspension that helps produce terrific agility and steering precision as well as good balance.
So basically, you get a sports-car kind of ride in a luxury package.
The car's design is pleasant, with its neatly contoured lines and refined body panels.
So if you're rich and you know it, and you're not afraid to show it, the 760Li would be one way to do that.
