Columbus Day observances
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
If you are expecting something important in the mail Monday, or planning to have your driver’s license renewed, be prepared to wait another day.
Even though Columbus Day is recognized as a federal holiday, not everyone observes the day, which causes some confusion.
Government
All state Capitol state agencies will be closed, but the same cannot be said for local government entities. For some, like City of Atlanta and Fulton County government, Monday will be a day of business as usual.
Most libraries will be open, but post offices will be closed. And state troopers and communications officers will be working even though administrative offices at headquarters will be closed.
Monday’s holiday should not affect Atlanta area trash pick-up. Most trash collection entities, like DeKalb County and City of Atlanta, do not observe Columbus Day.
Banks
All banks will be closed. However, some credit unions may be open. Visit your banking institution's Web site for details.
Schools
Students in DeKalb County and Gwinnett schools will be taking the day off Monday, while students in Atlanta, Fulton, Clayton and Cobb will be in class.
If your child attends a private school, check with officials or their Web site to confirm whether your child's school will be having classes.
Commute
Morning traffic is expected to be light, according to the Georgia State Patrol.
MARTA riders should also take note. Customer service representatives report MARTA will be running their regular weekday bus and rail schedules.
About the holiday
Holiday set aside to recognize Christopher Columbus.
Observed the second Monday of October, this year Columbus Day falls on Oct. 12, the same day historians believe Columbus discovered America, Oct. 12, 1492.
