Time to pick up pet flood victims
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
More than 70 animals were rescued in Cobb County during last month's historic flooding. Many were retrieved by boats, long after their owners were pulled to safety.
Sixteen of those animals are still in the county's shelter. Now, it's time to come reclaim those pets, officials say, or they may become someone else's pets.
“We understand that many people lost almost everything in the floods, including their pets," says Capt. Jeff Patellis with the Department of Public Safety. "We are going to make sure we do all we can to get these animals back to their rightful owners."
Pictures of some of the four-legged flood victims still at the shelter are now posted on the shelter's Web site, animalcontrol.cobbcountyga.gov. The site also gives a a general location of where the animals were rescued.
While the shelter hopes to reunite all of the pets with owners, after Nov. 3, any flood victims left at the shelter can be adopted by others, Patellis said.
“Even after Nov. 3, the Animal Control Unit will continue to aggressively attempt to find new homes for these pets,” he said.
If you think one of the animals belongs to you, contact the shelter at 770-499-4136. The $50 fee normally required to reclaim animals will be waived for flood victims.
