Police chase ends in fatal crash in Atlanta

A man being chased by Cobb County police was killed early Thursday when the stolen car he was driving wrecked near the Chattahoochee River.

Atlanta and Cobb police were on the scene at 3785 Paces Ferry Road in Atlanta where a man being chased by Cobb County police was killed early Thursday, November 12, 2009 in Atlanta  when the stolen car he was driving wrecked near the Chattahoochee River. Cobb police spokesman Joseph Hernandez said officers had a lookout for a stolen Ford Contour that had allegedly been involved  in several burglaries in the Vinings area. An officer spotted the Contour on Paces Ferry Road about 2:30 a.m. Thursday, and when the officer tried to stop the car, "the driver steps on it," Hernandez said. The Contour sped across the Chattahoochee River into Atlanta, where the driver lost control and struck a tree The driver was killed and a passenger sustained non-life-threatening injuries, Hernandez said Their names have not been released, but Hernandez said they were black males in their late teens or early 20s.
