Mother tries to find son's killer

A mother is trying to find who ran over her son in Marietta 10 months ago and then sped off.
Charlie E. Jones, 23, was killed Jan. 24 after being struck by two vehicles, police said.
Officers found Jones on Piedmont Road in Marietta, near Rio Montana Drive.
On Friday, Jones’ mother, Sharon McCarter, traveled from her Mount Vernon, Va., home to Marietta to visit the site of her son’s death. On Saturday, she will place a wreath at the site , hoping that passing drivers might remember something about what happened that morning.
“Someone knows something,” she said. “Hopefully they will help me.”
Jones, a student at DeVry University, had gone out with some coworkers.
“They had gone to a restaurant, and had drinks and dinner. He went to a friend’s house instead of driving home,” McCarter said.
Jones woke early and decided to walk back to the restaurant to get his car, his mother said.
He was crossing the street just before 5 a.m. when he was struck by an Infiniti. The car kept going leaving Jones lying in the road, McCarter said.
Jones, of Fairburn, was struck again. This time the driver of the Toyota Tundra, which was towing a boat, stopped, McCarter said.
The Toyota driver called police.
Investigators questioned the Toyota driver and released her. Detectives are still hoping to find the Infiniti.
“The police at that time did some investigating, going door-to-door and searching some cars,” McCarter said. “But after a couple of months, the lead detective said there wasn’t much more they could do unless someone comes forward.”
On Friday, Cobb County police spokesman Officer Joseph Hernandez said the hit and run is still an ongoing investigation.
McCarter said she is pleading with residents who might know who was driving the Infiniti. The only description available is for a 2000-2004 Infiniti model I30 or I35.
Anyone with information may contact Cobb County police at 770-499-3900.
