Flooding closes bridges, stalls traffic

Commuters who live west of the city are having trouble getting home tonight now that state officials closed several bridges over the Chattahoochee River.

The Georgia Department of Transportation closed bridges on SR 166, 92 and 70 over the Chattahoochee, state officials said.

At 7:30 p.m., the DOT was preparing to open parts of I-285, a DOT spokeswoman said. The entire loop was to be open by 9 p.m., officials said.

The DOT recommends westbound drivers take I-75 north to SR 120, and go west through Dallas.

State officials said they will re-inspect the bridges and interstates once the water recedes to make sure the pavement hasn't cracked and they are safe for travel, state DOT spokeswoman Monica Luck said.

"Under these extraordinary circumstances, we believe we have no choice but to tell motorists that they venture out in this area at their own peril," she said.

Several other roads or sections of roads remain closed Tuesday due to flooding, debris and, in some cases, the roads being washed away.

Safety officials are urging drivers to heed barricades. Even in instances of no visible flooding, many roads have been compromised.

"Motorists need to alter their travel plans or they can expect to get stuck. And if it rains again, we could have a very severe situation on our hands," Luck said.
