Deputy Chief John Houser was confirmed as Cobb County's new police chief Tuesday.

Houser, who has been with the department for 29 years, was recommended for the job by County Manager David Hankerson following interviews for the position before a panel of county officials.

The police department had been without a chief after the retirement earlier this year of longtime Chief George Hatfield.

Also Tuesday, voters elected JoAnn Birrell as the new county commissioner for the East Cobb area. Birrell, communications manager and former lobbyist for Waste Management, defeated technology consultant Earl Stine in a runoff election for the seat formerly held by commission chairman Tim Lee.
