A woman killed in a Tuesday afternoon wreck in Marietta was fleeing another crash that occurred moments earlier, police said.

Cobb County police Sgt. Dana Pierce said Arwen Burns, 30, of Marietta, was driving west on Piedmont Road shortly before 5:30 p.m. when she struck a 2003 Honda Pilot near the intersection of Morgan Road.

Burns fled the scene, and within moments, lost control of her 2007 Chevrolet Equinox in a curve near the intersection of Piedmont Road and Piedmont Enclave Court, Pierce said.

"Her vehicle traveled into the center median of Piedmont Road, where it collided with, and came to rest in, a group of trees," Pierce said. "Ms. Burns died at the scene as a result of her injuries."

The driver of the Honda was treated at the scene for minor injuries.

Pierce said investigators believe alcohol and speed were contributing factors in the crash.
