Traffic has just resumed on Tara Boulevard in Clayton County, where an auto accident with injuries closed lanes in both directions, police said.

Around 5:45 p.m., an SUV turned from Dixon Street onto Tara into the path of an oncoming panel truck.

The truck hit the SUV and spilled its cargo of oxygen and carbon dioxide canisters into the street, Clayton County police spokeswoman Lt. Tina Daniel said.

The driver of the SUV was pinned and had to be cut out of the vehicle. He was then flown by helicopter to Atlanta Medical Center. The passenger of the SUV and the truck driver both suffered minor injuries, and were treated at the scene, Daniel said.

Police found a small amount of alcohol in the SUV and are investigating whether it was in an open container.

Daniel said the driver likely will be charged with violating a stop sign.

The incident remains under investigation.
