Two gunmen stormed the Waffle House at 669 Ga. 138 in Riverdale and attempted to rob the restaurant, police said.
They fired several shots into the air after they couldn’t get the cash register open, police told WSB-TV.
No injuries were reported, Waffle House spokesman Pat Warner said.
“We’re glad that none of our associates or customers were hurt,” he said Sunday.
Police closed the restaurant while they investigated and collected evidence. The restaurant remained closed on Sunday.
They hope to re-open on Monday, Warner said.
Waffle House restaurants are open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year -- including holidays, according to the company's website.
No suspect descriptions were available Sunday.
Warner said he could not comment on the details of the incident because of the open investigation.
Riverdale Police referred comments to Chief Samuel Patterson. Patterson did not return phone calls.
Riverdale Mayor Evelyn Wynn-Dixon said the chief would release information on Monday morning.
The first Waffle House opened near Avondale Estates in 1955. There are now about 1,500 Waffle House restaurants, including seven in Clayton County, according to the company's website.
