Guns stolen from Clayton police car

Clayton County police are looking for two assault rifles stolen from a police squad car late Thursday night.

The Clayton police car was one of two law enforcement cars broken into in the early hours of Friday morning, and one of three cars broken into within a five-mile radius, according to police records.

An MP5 sub-machine gun with a targeting sight, and a Bushmaster XM-15 machine gun with sight were taken from the Clayton police squad car.

Clayton police spokeswoman Lt. Rebecca Brown said the two submachine guns were taken from the trunk of the police car parked overnight at an apartment complex in Jonesboro.

“They tore open the door to get into the trunk,” Brown said.

The squad car was parked in a Jonesboro apartment complex on Monterey Circle.

A second car in this same complex, belonging to a woman married to an Army serviceman, was robbed of a U.S. Army-issue bullet-proof vest, a Kevlar helmet and a military ID.

Two bullet-proof vests also were stolen from a Clayton County Sheriff’s Office patrol car, along with a laptop computer.

The sheriff’s car was parked at an apartment complex on Upper Riverdale Road in Riverdale.

Police are investigating.
