DOTHAN, Ala. — A Houston County sheriff's deputy has been placed on paid administrative leave as authorities continue to investigate the death of a 43-year-old Georgia man who was handcuffed after a bar fight in Dothan.

Dothan police said in a statement that a deputy used a Taser on the man at least twice after he continued to be combative.

Dothan Police Chief Greg Benton told The Dothan Eagle that his officers used the appropriate amount of force for the circumstances.

Johnnie Kamahi Warren of Forest ParkĀ  was declared dead at 3:16 a.m. Monday.

Dothan police say they got a call at 1:48 a.m. from a bar where employees struggled with a man. Shortly after he was handcuffed, Warren began to lose consciousness.

The Alabama Bureau of Investigation is investigating.
