Civil War-era zombies movie to be shot in Savannah

Savannah will be awash in Civil War-era zombies this weekend when production starts on the film, "‘Abraham Lincoln vs. Zombies."

Devin Ward, who lived in Savannah for a time after college, has been leading efforts to find cast members and locations for the "historical horror" film that pits Honest Abe against Confederate and Union undead alike.

"I really wanted to get back to shoot something here, and this movie fell into my lap," said Ward, a freelance filmmaker who now lives in Los Angeles.

He said Savannah was chosen because of its historic forts and homes. "You get a feeling that we walked right out of 1863," he said. He said scenes will be shot at Fort Pulaski and at some of the city's historic homes downtown.

Ward said Savannah has been most welcoming as his crew prepares to shoot the film, which is being produced by Four Score Films LLC and has a budget of under $1 million.

"It's been incredible here. People have been saying come shoot here, use our land for a day," Ward said.

He said all the crew and cast of about 30 people per day will be made up of Georgia natives.

It's not too late if you're interested in a part, Ward said. They're still looking to cast Lincoln and need a few more zombies.

The Savannah Film Office says filming is expected to continue through Feb. 13.
