An army of volunteers is in Austell today cleaning up and repairing flood-damaged homes.

About 1,000 volunteers from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints showed up to help.

"We're not going to church this morning -- we're going to work," said Dena Brett, a church spokeswoman.

The volunteers assessed some of the disaster areas and saw mold "as long as hair" growing on furniture and walls, up to six inches of stagnant and toxic water and other horrific conditions, Brett said. Just as they did following Hurricane Katrina, the workers brought their own survival kits, water, tools and gloves.

The volunteers, who came from Lilburn, Jonesboro, Powder Springs, Marietta and Cartersville, plan to work all day on Ceylon Drive inĀ  Sweetwater Plantation and on Brass Drive near Clarkdale Elementary School.
