The Rome City Commission is expected to take up what has become a contentious issue in other Georgia cities.

The Rome News-Tribune reports (http://bit.ly/zKbcZ9) that a proposed ordinance on the agenda for Monday night's meeting would allow residents with lots of at least 5,000 square feet to keep as many as four hens for personal use. No sales, butchering or roosters would be allowed.

Rome-Floyd County Planning Director Sue Hiller said the ordinance would establish limits on birds and a method of enforcement.

The issue has been a contentious one in cities such as Roswell, where a man known as the "chicken man" gained notoriety in 2009, when city officials cited him for raising poultry in his backyard.
