The developers of the mixed-use Avalon project along Ga. 400 in Alpharetta has struck a deal to connect homes, apartments, retail tenants and its high-end office users with ultra-high-speed Internet service.

North American Properties said Thursday its deal with Hotwire Communications, a provider of fiber-to-the-premises broadband, will create the first Georgia community providing “gigabit” Internet speeds to all residents, hotel guests and workers. The direct link to fiber optic cable provides Internet speeds more than 100 times faster than typical broadband connections. Terms of the deal and prices of the service have not been disclosed.

The high-speed service is coveted by technology companies and other large data users, and the offerings will be a selling point for Avalon, a $600 million development along Old Milton Parkway. The first phase of Avalon is slated to open in October 2014 with 250 luxury apartments, 101 single family residences, more than 100,000 square feet of office space and retailers like Whole Foods, Gap and Banana Republic.

“Gigabit service is a catalyst for economic development, and it’s crucial for future-proofing development in metro Atlanta,” NAP Managing Partner Mark Toro said in a news release. “With bandwidth requirements growing at more than 30 percent per year, this is the way to get ahead…and stay ahead.”
