Gwinnett County investigators are on the scene of a deadly single-car crash on the ramp from Buford Drive to I-85 Tuesday morning.

A driver in a hit-and-run incident was killed in a crash off an I-85 ramp in Gwinnett County early Tuesday morning, police said.

The driver of a black Mini Cooper hit a barrier wall head-on when the vehicle left the ramp to I-85 South from Buford Drive. According to Gwinnett police, the man was involved in an earlier wreck on I-85 South near Hamilton Mill Road.

He was later identified by police as Regginald Lewis, 27, of Forest Park.

A woman driving a tan Dodge Ram told police she was rear-ended by the Mini Cooper, and both drivers pulled off to the side of the interstate. After an exchange of words, Lewis allegedly took off. The woman was able to get his tag number, according to a police report.

Officers caught up with the Mini Cooper on Buford Drive about 4:20 a.m., Gwinnett police spokesman Sgt. Jake Smith told AJC.com. They tried to pull the car over, but Lewis headed for the interstate ramp and crashed, he said. No other vehicles were involved.

The ramp was shut down for several hours while authorities investigated, and it reopened just before 8 a.m., the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center reported.

While roads were wet and temperatures were near freezing across metro Atlanta Tuesday, Gwinnett police said the crash was not weather-related.
